Miranda July ist wohl eine der faszinierendsten Künstler*innenpersönlichkeiten des 21. Jahrhunderts. Autorin, Regisseurin, Musikerin, Performancekünstlerin, Schauspielerin – und auch mit dieser Fülle an Begriffen lässt sich ihr Werk nicht ganz umfassen.
Nun liegt im Prestel Verlag zum ersten Mal der Versuch einer Retrospektive vor. Ich sage Versuch, meine damit aber nicht, dass der Katalog misslungen ist. Aber ich glaube, er darf als Versuch begriffen werden, als Fenster auf das Werk von July, nicht aber als Tür, durch die man all die darin verhandelten Werke ungehindert betreten und umfassend abschreiten kann. Wir reden hier schließlich auch von Filmen, Performances, Installationen, etc. Der Katalog tut sein Bestes, die Dimension der Werke zu würdigen und die Ausblicke, die er gewährt, werden wohl viele Leser*innen dazu animieren, schnellstmöglich nach einer Tür Ausschau zu halten.
Den Auftakt, vor der Auswahl der Werke aus den Jahren 1992-2020, bildet ein Gespräch zwischen July und Julia Bryan-Wilson, über Julys Kindheit, ihr Werk und dessen Motive. Die folgende Werkauswahl enthält sowohl Originalausschnitte aus Skripten, Fotomontagen, etc. als auch dokumentarische Fotos von Filmdrehs, Perfomances, etc., sowie eine größere Menge an Kommentaren von Mitwirkenden und Zeitzeugen.
Kurzum: für Fans von July und für diejenigen, die mit der ganzen Faszination ihres Werkes konfrontiert werden wollen, ist dieses Buch ein Fest.

Miranda July is probably one of the most fascinating artists of the 21st century. Author, director, musician, performance artist, actress – and even this abundance of terms cannot fully encompasse her work.
The Prestel Verlag has now made a retrospective of her work. I say try, but I don’t mean that the catalog is bad or lacks substance. But I think it can be seen as an attempt, as a window on the work of Miranda July, but not as a door through which one can enter and fully admire all of the works in it. After all, we are talking about films, performances, installations, etc. The catalog does its best to show the dimensions of the work and the views and aspects it provides will probably encourage many readers to look for a door as quickly as possible .
The prelude, before the selection of works from 1992-2020, is a conversation between July and Julia Bryan-Wilson about July’s childhood, her work and its motifs. The following selection of works contains original excerpts from scripts, photo montages, etc. as well as documentary photos from film shoots, performances, etc., as well as a larger amount of comments from contributors, friends and contemporary witnesses.
In short: for fans of July and for those who want to be confronted with the full fascination of their work, this book is a feast.
